“The interim government of Bangladesh is incapable of maintaining law and order and regularly tries to shift the blame onto others.” It would be good for them if they do some soul-searching and conduct a thorough investigation into the violence, arson and land grabbing activities of local extremists against minority communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made these remarks in response to a journalist’s question at the weekly briefing.
Jaiswal has categorically rejected the allegation made by Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Advisor that the recent violence in Khagrachari was ‘fuelled by India’. He said, “I categorically reject this allegation.”
A teenage girl from the Marma ethnic group was allegedly gang-raped in Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila on the night of September 23. Protests and tension have been ongoing in this hilly district since the incident.
The next day, on September 24, the police, with the help of the army, arrested a 19-year-old youth named Shayan Shil in connection with the incident. On Thursday, ‘Jumma Chhatra-Janta’ held a half-day road blockade in the district demanding the arrest and trial of the others involved in the incident.
Then, at 5 am on September 27, a blockade program began under the banner of ‘Jumma-Chhatra Janata’. Due to the program, traffic was blocked on the Chittagong-Khagrachari, Khagrachari-Rangamati and Khagrachari-Sajek roads.
Amidst such tension, violence broke out in Guimaras under Section 144, resulting in at least three people being shot dead. Several shops were looted during the incident.
Later, the doctor who led the examination said that the Marma teenager’s medical examination report found “no signs of rape.”
Meanwhile, on September 29, when asked by journalists in Dhaka, Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury alleged that ‘India’s fuel’ was behind the renewed tension in Khagrachari.
That day, a journalist asked him a question and he said that weapons and money were being supplied from neighboring countries. For a long time, they have been planning and saying that they would take India as a province.
Supporting this statement, the advisor said, “Brother, you have asked a true question. Is this incident being caused by India or by fascists? We are taking all possible measures to prevent this from happening.”
